Certificate of Advanced English

This exam validates an advanced level of English and represents the next step on the way to a proficient level of English. This level is internationally recognized by educational institutions, businesses and commerce.

Further studies or professions requiring this level of English:

PR, bilingual secretarial positions, sales, banking, hotel and tourism, transport, travel  agents, international airlines, foreign correspondence and journalism, ambassadors, interpreting, translation, IT, EU, etc …

The exam consists of four parts:

  • Reading and Use of English (1hour 30mins)

34 multiple choice questions, completing texts and reading comprehension questions about a text. Essential points such as text structure cohesion and linking language is tested here.

  • Writing (1 hour 30 minutes)

Candidates have two answer 2 questions. The first is compulsory (such as answering a letter or email) of 200-250 words.

The second essay is either an article report or essay on a subject. The candidate can choose from three possible questions.

This writing paper will test the candidates’ wealth of vocabulary, the structures, spelling, punctuation and cohesive devices used. Candidates need to give their own opinions and be able to justify and defend these points of view as well as advise, describe, compare and explain something in detail. …

  • Listening (40 minutes)

Candidates listen to 4 authentic dialogues and conversations for specific information.

A : 3 short extracts and exchanges between 2 people – 2 questions par extract.

B : Listen to short monologues. Complete the sentences to test understanding of information given

C : A longer dialogue or interview, to test comprehension in general with multiple-choice questions.

: A series of 5 short extracts on the same topic. This exercise is to test if the candidate can identify a specific speaker and interpret what they are saying.

Each recording is played twice.

  • Speaking (14-16 minutes)

There are 2 candidates and 2 examiners to give speaking guidelines and visual aid. Candidates communicate with each other and with the examiner, by exchanging information and opinions through a series of guided tasks or problems. Here the candidate is tested for grammar, vocabulary, interactive communication and task achievement.

RESULTS: The results arrive about 10 weeks after the exam (during the summer break). The official certificates arrive about 3 months later (August/September). Les diplômes sont  disponibles environ 3 mois plus tard.

Pass marks: Grade A, B, C.

Fails: D, E et U (unclassified).

Candidates receive an overall grade and not individual grades per exam paper.

The teachers have tested the pupils in class and in the mock exams and will decide if your child is ready or not to take the CAE exam. However, should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mme Helen THIRTLE LEOTARD (Head of the Languages Department).

Candidates must have an ID card with them on the day of the exam!

For a cancellation up to 3 weeks before the exam, a 50 % reimbursement is possible. After this date, no reimbursement is possible. It is impossible to transfer enrolment to another exam or an exam at a later date.
